Today, I’m diving into a book that had me reaching for tissues and left a lasting impression on my heart: Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott. If you’re in the mood for a story that combines love, resilience, and the trials of living with cystic fibrosis (CF), then this is the book for you.

The story introduces us to Stella Grant and Will Newman, two teenagers whose lives are dominated by their CF diagnosis. Stella is a rule follower, diligently adhering to her treatment regimen and striving to control the uncontrollable. Will, on the other hand, is rebellious and weary of the endless hospital stays and treatments.

Their relationship starts off rocky, filled with witty banter and friction. But as they get to know each other, sparks fly, and they form a connection that neither expected. The catch? They must maintain a six-foot distance to avoid cross-infection — a rule that becomes increasingly difficult to follow as their feelings deepen.

One of the most touching moments in the book is when Stella says, “If I’m going to die, I’d like to actually live first.” This line beautifully captures her spirit and desire to experience life beyond the confines of her illness. Will’s response, “It’s just life, Will. It’ll be over before we know it,” reveals his struggle with the same fear and desire for freedom. Their decision to reduce their distance to five feet is a powerful act of defiance and love. “After all, what’s one foot if it gets us closer to what we want?” Stella’s words resonate deeply, symbolizing their fight to reclaim a piece of normalcy in their lives.

Rachael Lippincott’s writing hits you right in the feels, immersing you in Stella and Will’s world from the get-go. The dialogue feels so natural and genuine, bringing the characters to life and making you root for them every step of the way. The hospital setting, with its cold, sterile vibe and ever-present reminders of their fragility, is perfectly balanced by the warm and fragile connection that Stella and Will share.

Five Feet Apart is more than just a love story. It’s a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder of the importance of living life to its fullest, no matter the circumstances. This book will make you laugh, cry, and appreciate the little things in life.

If you’re looking for a heartfelt and beautifully written story, Five Feet Apart should be at the top of your reading list. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that you won’t soon forget. So grab a copy, settle into a cozy spot, and prepare to be moved by Stella and Will’s journey !
